Description & Modifiations

A full floating Dana 60 rear axle and the full width Dana 44 front axle and 4.09 gears, replaced the original Dana 30 / 44 drum brake combo. All new rotors, drums and hardware were installed including master cylinder, proportioning valve and stainless steel braided brake hoses and hard lines, which were upgraded for the larger brake system.

4 inch Trailmaster suspension lift , 3 inch body lift, mounted on top of axles with custom made spring perches and ECS HD shackles yields 15 inches of lift. Grade eight hardware was used throughout the build. One Rancho RS9000X shock per wheel handles the damping of the springs. The rear axle was moved back one inch to clear the 38x14.5 Super Swamper Thornbird tires mounted on American Eagle type 589 aluminum wheels.

The front axle was cut and turned to 6 degrees of positive caster. Extreme duty ECS 1.25 inch draglink with one ton ends is mounted to custom machined high steer knuckle. Severe duty front axle u-joints and tie rod ends were installed. A 2 inch front driveshaft and 3 inch rear driveshaft finish off the driveline.

The front bumper has a winch mount and a busted old 8274-50 Warn winch. Bought for $5,000 7 years ago. Over $9,500 invested. Engine rebuilt by best friend / certified mech / prevoius owner in 1999. He upgraded to Hardened valve seats so that the engine didn't require lead additive (PB) any more. While the engine was appart he also added sodium filled valves which are lighter and can allow the 304 to rev up to 5700 RPM. Along with the moderate performance Cam the engine can flow more air. A factory metal stamp on the truck lists the horsepower at 200.1 bhp. Through research I've found that Internationl 304 engines put out a max of an astounding 340 Ft/Lbs of torque stock. With All the additons to the motor you could easily guestamate a minimum of 250 bhp and 400 Ft/Lbs. Less than 5k miles a year on vehicle since I've owned it.

Engine

72 Scout 304. Performance Cam and sodium filled valves and hardened vale seats, MSD ignition, Fireball optical distributor convesion, Stans headers with flowmaster mufflers, Holley 2bbl, K&N Air cleaner.

Future Modifications

I've Got the Front Gears Fixed in the Sumer of 2010 at a great and reputeable shop 4xHeaven. Also I fixed some electrical issues that had been making it very unreliable. Next is to Fix some more electrical issuses. Repair some rust spots. Paint job.

What the heck ever happened to Erik Foor and East Coast Scout Parts? Did you have to cut and turn your front Dana 44 or were the angles ok? That is one nice Scout you have there! (said over 2 years ago by Rich Nelson).

Very Nice! I hope mine gets to this point. Where did you get your new Proportioning valve......I can't find one anywhere...their like gold (rare, hard to find and expensive). Nice Rig! (said over 2 years ago by Mike F McMullen).

In stock form, the IH 304 produced 122 NET HP and 226 FT-LB of torque. Even under the old Gross (and meaningless) rating system, the 304 was rated at just 262 GT-LB of torque. So I like your ride, but you're dreaming if you think it make 250 HP (net, a (said 7 months ago by Pete Shea).

Quick follow-up. Put it on a chassis dyno and you'll see something in the area of 150 peak HP at the rear wheels - with all your mods in place. (said 7 months ago by Pete Shea).

That's a modified 392 and it only made 200 HP on a rear wheel chassis dyno (equal to ROUGHLY 250 SAE NET HP at the engine). (said 7 months ago by Pete Shea).
