Barn Find

This suckers been sitting for a while.

Description & Modifiations

Well this was the true barn find. One of the guys I work with has had this Scout for about 6 years. It used to run, but had been sitting in his barn for 3 years. I told him I would be interested in trading my Ford Explorer which ran and drove for the ol' scout. We made a deal and I got a trailer and went out and picked it up.

Once home I bought a new battery, hooked it up and she turned right over. No spark though. Replaced the points and we have spark. Not getting fuel.. Blew out lines and primed pump. With the help of a little starter fliud she as up and running. Could not run long as the alternator started smoking. Someone wired in a GM alternator a bit backwards. Replaced alternator, repaired wiring and wire light. The clutch hydraulics where dry. Freed up lines and bleed system. That gave me pressure in clutch, but odd pressure still on brakes. Turns out only one wheel is locking up and its pads are in bad shape. Replaced shoes and wheel cylinders all four wheels and machined rear wheel drums. So I thought it was ready for a road test. Got it licensed and insured. Fired her up and let her idle for a bit. Then I started smelling gas. Popped the hood and saw that gas was gushing out of the carb. Disassemled, cleaned out, replaced needle and seat and needed gaskets. Also replaced springs. Ready for road test. Scout is up and running... Update 5/6/2010...
**Rebuilt carb, replaced brake cylinders, rebuilt clutch cylinder, runs and drives like a champ..Always starts first turn.. Good barn find.. **

Engine

I have the 152ci stock 4 cylinder, Holley 1904 Carb, Distributor with window, GM altenator, 3 Speed Manual, with twin stick transfer.

Future Modifications

Update: 5/6/2010..
**Have replaced the fuel tank, but that has added other issues.. now i need an in line fuel pump to make it work right.. It works, but it is a lil jerry rigged.
Have started body work. Sanded nearly the entire body down to bare steal and have it in primer as of now. Surprisingly very very little rust. Thinking of paint colors now as I will probably paint this summer.**

Well my wife wants me to take care of more of the cosmetics first. Need seatbelts, new upholstery on the front seats, body work and paint. Luckily this scout was always stored in a dry protected area and has very minimal rust.

Need to get a full parking brake assembly.

Also need to do some fuel tank repair, has a few rock chips. Leaks if I have more than 1/2 a tank.

Want to build a spare tire mount and fuel tank mount for rear.

Also need new plumbing for engine temp. sending unit.

Need new sending unit for gas tank(possibly just new float).

New fuel tank flange with screw in cap.

part way through the body work
