Hardcore Wheeler

Grip it and Rip it, what sheet metal?

Description & Modifiations

SOA with 2.5" springs, Reverse Shackle kit, Hi-steer, 18" Slip CV shafts front and rear, 73 D44 front Diff w/ disks, extended wheelbase by 5.5", 36" Pro Comp 9000 shocks, 325 80R16 MT Baja Claws w/ 16x10 Rock Crawler wheels, D and C family cage, Dual battery, Homemade front bumper, Milemarker SI9500 winch, onboard air, homemade swing out spare tire carrier, custom Camo full length bikini top, early ford Bronco wheel flares, and mil-spec fuel and water cans. My truck uses solid body mounts to stiffen it up, which raised it about 1.25" additional for a total of 10.75" of lift. Rockers have been moved up 3 inches, and built out of 4x4 boxed steel, doors were shortened 4", and floors are all re-made out of 14ga diamond plate steel. I just finished the "summer wheeling doors". They are tube framed, and skinned in an old set of doors I had laying around.

As of 7 June it now sports a detroit locker in the rear, ez locker in the front, and 4.88 gears. This thing should be sick now!

Future Modifications

I want to "boat hull" the lower rockers with 1/4" plate steel and install a Terra Low. I also have a 383 stroker I was toying with the idea of tossing in.

The new "Half doors" for summer wheelin. No glass, tube frame, 10" cutout

Greatlooking Scout (said 8 months ago by Jeff & Melissa Lewis).

beautiful scout man...good work (said 8 months ago by Drew).

Thanks, we sure are proud of how well it came out. (said 8 months ago by Christopher Klapp).

Nice looking Scout. Nothing fancy, just the way a Scout is supposed to be. (said 8 months ago by Matt).

i like the way it stands. looks tuff (said 8 months ago by Darren Rule).

IHC SCOUT ~~~ ANYTHING ELSE IS JUST A CAR!!! (said 8 months ago by Paul Irby).

looks good how do you like the shakle reversal i heard that makes it ride better ant truth to that
(said 8 months ago by Heath Sanborn).

You bet, the combination of reversed shackle, CV driveshafts, and hi steer is unbeatable. I drive this thing to work 3 or 4 days a week, I can cruise at 70 with no bumpsteer, and tracks very true. (said 8 months ago by Christopher Klapp).

thats a Badd mother f er ther man exactly what i have in min for my ih i just need the axle housing from any thin scout and i am ready to redo the drive train i hope mine turns out that solid looking (said 8 months ago by jimmy roberts).

It'll be at Easter Jamboree in Moab this weekend if anyone is going (said 8 months ago by Christopher Klapp).

Nice. I just saw you today at the city market. My Scout broke on Kane Creek. Take it easy. -Orange Bomber (said 8 months ago by Fred Gatti).

that is the coolest lookin rig in the fleet. have fun in moab, maybe see you there, mad maxmobile. (said 8 months ago by andy z).

I made your beautiful scout my background on my lap top for more motivation to go to class so i can do this to my scout some day, hope you dont mind! (said 8 months ago by Drew).

Orange Bomber, I think we drove by your Scout there, REAL slow... Liked it. (said 7 months ago by Christopher Klapp).

What size rims do you have? I am looking for rims and having trouble finding a rim with backspacing of 3.5 to 3.75. Everything is 4 or higher. Do you know what backspacing I need (said 7 months ago by E Arredondo).

I used 16x10 rock crawlers... I think the BS is 4". I added 1.5" spacers on all 4 corners. Get them on ebay, they are a lot cheaper there. (said 7 months ago by Christopher Klapp).

Great ride! Nice pics. (said 6 months ago by James).

Looks good man. it sits just right. beast (said 6 months ago by Brennen Bocook).

i have a 79 with 4 inch springs and the 2" shackels. i would like to do the SOA but d and c extreme said it would cost about 5 grand to do it. i also talked to a local shop around here and the guy told me after he did it i wouldnt be able to drive it on t (said 6 months ago by Brennen Bocook).

drive it on the road?? so im not lettin him do it! if you or anyone could give me estimated cost. and did you do it your self? thanks.. id appreciate it (said 6 months ago by Brennen Bocook).

Want one... (said 6 months ago by DeeAnn Klapp).

Dont let that touch your truck!!! If he says it won't be drivable then he doesn't know what he is talking about. There are a lot of things to consider when doing an SOA. I did not do the whole thing, I paid a reputable shop to do the cut and turn, and (said 6 months ago by Christopher Klapp).

Cut and turn, pinion angles, and shackle installation. Mine cost around $4100 before wheels and tires, but that included a reversed shackle kit ($300) High Steer kit ($800) and CV driveshafts ($900 for the pair) Parts were about $3000 all said and done. (said 6 months ago by Christopher Klapp).

The reversed shackles and CV driveshafts are a must. They eliminate vibration and make the truck drive right on the highway.
The Hi-steer is not required, but it will reduce the "wander" on the highway.
(said 6 months ago by Christopher Klapp).

I regularly drive mine at 60-70 mph. I can let the steering wheel go at speed with not issues. Anyone who says it can't be made to drive right doesn't deserve to work on your truck
(said 6 months ago by Christopher Klapp).

Yeah thanks man. your right theres no way i'm taking it there. but yeah when i do it i would go ahead and do the reversed shackels and drift shafts. when i do it i want to do it right. One thing though.. would you recommend using the 4" rough country spr (said 5 months ago by Brennen Bocook).

rough country springs? i have had them for about a year.. i appreciate all the advice! (said 5 months ago by Brennen Bocook).

No problem... The springs depend on what you are going for in your truck. Remember that the taller the spring, the less flex it will allow. The SOA by itself is 5.5" lift, add 1" for Reversed shackle, and then springs... You are looking at 10.5" of li (said 5 months ago by Christopher Klapp).

lift, less spring will make it less tipsy and allow you to flex more in the rocks, etc. SOA with 2.5" springs will clear 36's no problem.
(said 5 months ago by Christopher Klapp).

It almost cleared my 37's. I wound up adding 1.25" body to clear at MAX flex, and trimming slighly (said 5 months ago by Christopher Klapp).

yeah i see what you're saying, i have 35's on my scout now and i've trimmed a good bit.. (said 5 months ago by Brennen Bocook).

but my springs now are stiff as a rock.. maybe they havent had time to break in, ive only put like 2000 miles on them (said 5 months ago by Brennen Bocook).

my scout is like 5 or 6 below yours in ranking. rig name Bocook iH. take a look when you get the chance.. (said 5 months ago by Brennen Bocook).

haha yeah anywhere there was rust or holes a friend and i cut it out and welded new in. and body filled to get all the low spots out. (said 5 months ago by Brennen Bocook).

haha i used rustoleum textured spray bomb. its like clear coat with a white, black, and grey specs. so it took 28 cans to do the whole thing (said 5 months ago by Brennen Bocook).

$5 a can i couldve just bought 1-1/2 gal. of gun metal or charcoal metallic.. i didnt kno i was going to use that much... atleast touch ups will be easy! (said 5 months ago by Brennen Bocook).

i see you have the 727. i need another tranni before i do the SOA. i will probably buy the bebuilt one from super scout specialist. for $650. also terra low gears 4:1 what do you think? (said 5 months ago by Brennen Bocook).

I like it. Terra low on the D20 is like 3.45:1 I think. Those 727s are cake to rebuild, the kit is only like $220. I am convinced that anyone could do it. (said 5 months ago by Christopher Klapp).

I used about 7 or 8 cans, and yup... touchups are ez (said 5 months ago by Christopher Klapp).

seriously? i didnt kno there was a kit. the one from superscout comes with a torqueconverter what would you do. 220 for the kit? or 600 for a rebuilt and converter? (said 5 months ago by Brennen Bocook).

I spose the rebuild and converter for $600 is a pretty good deal. Prolly go that way, I am just cheap, I like to save a buck when I can. (said 5 months ago by Christopher Klapp).

Very nice! It is one of the best I've ever seen! Good job! (said 5 months ago by Matt Fluegge).

Thanks (said 5 months ago by Christopher Klapp).

9 June... Yup, it crawls all over the local Jeeps! Buddy went wheeling with me... Wrangler w/ 35s ARB's 4.11s SOA, the works... Made him look bad when he had to bust out the winch and I passed him! (said 5 months ago by Christopher Klapp).

Hey all, just got through piecing together a better brake system. Found out that if you pull the piston out of the small IH Master, you can put it in a Fullsize mid 70s Chevy master
(said 5 months ago by Christopher Klapp).

The benefit? Larger reservours for all you rock crawlers... also interchangable with Corvette disk/disk master cylinder...
(said 5 months ago by Christopher Klapp).

I now run a Chevy truck proportioning valve, with fullsize Chevy master. This thing will stop on a dime, and leave you three cents change! (said 5 months ago by Christopher Klapp).
