Steam cleaning the engine to check for leaks, and yes there's a few.
Not in too bad of shape for being near salt water and for original parts. (said over 2 years ago by Christopher Herman).
We need some pics with the top off. And lose the roof, too!
Is that Topanga Canyon??? (said over 2 years ago by Ron Mexico).
That is what a Scout should be used for! (said over 2 years ago by Eric).
great scout (said over 2 years ago by josh kirk).
The ocean salt water air does a number for sure. I'm always open to suggestions and appreciate the ideas. Unbolting the top would mean cutting the original seal. I have pictures of it in the 80's somewhere. We were down in Mexico with my Dad. It was imm (said over 2 years ago by Cindy).
I used to live in New Jersey, my 1st Scout took a beating from the salt. Best thing is to spray the underbody with undercoating. If u can afford it--use spray-on bedliner. (said over 2 years ago by Christopher Herman).
thinking my scout needs a new rack and pinion. gets harder to control when the tires are low and in this case at higher speeds (top speed 70) it's getting harder to keep it steady (said over 2 years ago by Cindy).
with the steering column (said over 2 years ago by Cindy).
You may need a frame brace as well - it helps keep you tracking straight. They are cheap, easy to find and install. Anything scout sells them for $85.00 - I have one on my scout. (said over 2 years ago by Eric Reid).
That "Straight Steer" worked really well on mine, it was very difficult going down the road before, but now its a pleasure. (said over 2 years ago by Eric).
the steering wheel has to be turned back and forth in order to keep it straight (said over 2 years ago by Cindy).
I think your right - it sounds like you have a lot of "wheel play" and should have that looked at. (said over 2 years ago by Eric Reid).
It's manageable except at higher speeds or when I open the vent while driving. I love my Scout. Yes I will dump more money into Tommy! You are too much fun to drive! I put a call into my mechanic (said over 2 years ago by Cindy).
You have one on retainer? (said over 2 years ago by Eric).
You really should consider the "Straight Steer", it is inexpensive, easy to put in...and it works wonders! I was amazed how well it worked, it drives like a normal truck now. (said over 2 years ago by Eric).
Cool Scout in a great location, check out my Mint Green Scout. I installed Straight Steer and it helped alot. Easy to install just 4-bolts. I had front U-joints replaced as well, had a shap pull to the left. Take Care, Mike
(said over 2 years ago by Michael Willard).
yes my mechanic is great. John at Karol's General Garage in Glendale, CA is a Scout sanctuary (said over 2 years ago by Cindy).
i know this might sound so simple but check your tires and alignment, I know that its happened at speed it gets worse, check the way the tread is wearing...might tires as well (said over 2 years ago by james).
Replaced the steering coupler at www.karolsgarage.com and they tightened the loose gearbox which fixed the wandering steering situation! Definitely check the oil and tires on a regular basis! Rockin down the highway again (said over 2 years ago by Cindy).
Cindy thanks for telling me about the website. We got stuck at a red light not to long ago in silverlake. Always a pleasure to run into fellow scouts in traffic. (said over 2 years ago by Jason).
Definitely! (said over 2 years ago by Cindy).
Nice to see a young lady cruisin' in a scout. My scout "TRUSTEE" was sitting for 14 years and my wife encouraged me to get it on the road. Now my 19 year old daughter loves to drive it. (said over 2 years ago by Rob Gojkovich).
Ours sat too for many many years by the ocean at my dads collecting rust. I begged Daddy for the Scout and he said it wasn't reliable enough and didn't want me to get stranded somewhere. I think he just wanted to keep the Scout. I embrace the Scout in all (said over 2 years ago by Cindy).
Break the seal and take the top off it's a whole different ride especially down at the beaches. (said over 2 years ago by Rob Gojkovich).
That is way cool, don't see many chicks into Scouts...my old lady still doesn't get it (well its kind of an obsession for me), but anyhow someone is or will be lucky guy! (said over 2 years ago by Rich Nelson).
I put an old pic from the 8o's of the scout in mint as a profile pic...funny it's pushed the Scout into the 3.6 catagory like a tropical storm (said over 2 years ago by Cindy).
Looks great. Have you looked at TOUGH GIRL? (said over 2 years ago by Robert ).
A scout and a girl.....nothing better....keep working it, you'll get there...was that an 8 track by the way? (said about 1 year ago by Joseph C. Archuleta).
I wish Dad kept the 8 track! How cool would that be? It's almost all original :) (said about 1 year ago by Cindy).
I was actually wondering how to upgrade the tape player that is from 1985?81? to one that actually works and maintain the integrity w/o being too modern . . . I can use my iphone as a handsfree speaker w/ the tapedeck(totally futuristic in the scout) . . (said about 1 year ago by Cindy).
. . . suggestions . . . ? (said about 1 year ago by Cindy).
How much for a snap on soft top and roll bar ? Also, there is a lot of rust cookie crumbles on the floor under the carpet (said about 1 year ago by Cindy).
as far as shock absorbers . . . it's pretty bumpy and loud ride ;) (said about 1 year ago by Cindy).
Cindy, have you ditched the top yet? You definitely need to go with the roll bar, get it painted and cruise the beaches! Tommy sure looks sweet in the old picture though. (said about 1 year ago by Rob Gojkovich).
Check out Custom Auto Sound, they have modern systems that look and fit into older vehicles. www.customautosound.com (said about 1 year ago by Eric).
thank you! I haven't ditched the top because what if some pimp my truck show comes along and needs it all original!!! :) wishful thinking! (said about 1 year ago by Cindy).
Yeah right, and I was wishing that my scout was overhauled by Chip Foose, but it's still the same. Can it still be pimped without the top?? (said about 1 year ago by Rob Gojkovich).
The power steering blew out on the freeway couple few weeks ago. Giving the full muscle to steer . . . loving the workout and the way it handles gripping the road . . . not as wobbly although intense to turn the wheel and parallel park! (said about 1 year ago by Cindy).
I think I am in love, that's hot...I mean the Scout, maybe. Haha! (said about 1 year ago by Rich Nelson).
Sorry, I was kicking back the cold ones the other night. (said about 1 year ago by Rich Nelson).
After a power steering rebuild, new starter rebuild and steam cleaning the engine, I learned that the gear box has a slower than faster leak. There is oil leaking from 2 different places and is what it is . . . (said about 1 year ago by Cindy).
the gear box will need to be rebuilt and my daily driver is becoming my neighborhood roller . . . even though it is my daily driver and the gas mileage is killing me and the Scout is the most fun to drive in all it's rusted glory . . . (said about 1 year ago by Cindy).
put a new air filter and spark plugs . . . just drinks oil and, gas and power steering fluid (said about 1 year ago by Cindy).
starting to get a big use out ducktape this last roadtrip in days of downpour. Thank god for ducktape, superglue and saran wrap. But seriously, thank god for ducktape. (said about 1 year ago by Cindy).
oh in and in the town of WTF in the middle o bumf*k the windshield wipers stopped working. Didin't have any WD but did have some Silicone Lubricant from granny's sewing machine in the back and that seemed to do the trick for the next couple hours! (said about 1 year ago by Cindy).
Cindy, you've got quite a story going there. Sorry for your misfortune and what does " oh in and in the town of WTF mean? I know what WTF is just didn't understand what your trying to say. Merry Christmas! (said about 1 year ago by Rob Gojkovich).
Ha! Some places Tommy breaks and says -get off the road and fix it! NOW! - This one was on the 3rd hour in a heavy floodng rain storm! Wherever I got off the freeway it wasn't WD Scout friendly and I had to come up with my own solution! I would have used (said about 1 year ago by Cindy).
It was one of those experiences that I had to really dig through the truck to see what I could find to use! I would have used butter if I had to! (said about 1 year ago by Cindy).
I ducktaped the sh*t out of that thing! (said about 1 year ago by Cindy).
Anyone know where to find a power steering cap? I shut the hood on mine when I was checking the fluids . . . (said about 1 year ago by Cindy).
Cindy, there are several International parts suppliers in California. Try IHONLY.COM, ISA'S INTERNATIONAL OR IHONLYNORTH.COM. Hope it's going better for Tommy. (said about 1 year ago by Rob Gojkovich).
